Steganography is the practice of concealing a file message, image, or video
within another file, message, or image. The word steganography combines the
Greek word steganos, meaning “covered, concealed, or protected”, and
graphein meaning “writing”.
- Xiao Steganography is free software that can be used to hide secret files in BMP images or WAV files. Using the tool is easy: you can just open the software and load any BMP image or WAV file to its interface. Then add a file you want to hide.
- Image Steganography is another free program for hiding your information in image files. You can hide text messages or files inside an image file. Just select the source file in which you want to hide the secret message and then select the file to hide or write the hidden message directly. Select the output image location and then click on the start button to start encoding the file.
- Steghide is open-source steganography software that lets you hide your secret file in an image or audio file. You will not notice any change in the image or audio file. However, your secret file will be inside the original image or audio file.
- Binwalk is an open-source steganographic tool for analyzing, reverse engineering and extracting firmware images. This tool automatically detects and extracts hidden files. It is designed to scan a firmware image and searches for file signatures to identify and extract file system images, compressed archives, executable code, bootloader, and kernel images like JPEGs and PDFs.
- Exif tool is a Kali Linux application that allows a user to view and manipulate the metadata of the image. An image can give tons of information like which device, ISO, date, time, lens type, flash settings, etc. This information can be extracted and modified using the Exif tool. ExifTool is also very commonly used for producing steganographic and open-source intelligence challenges and is also used by students and professionals who play CTF challenges. ExifTool can also be used to embed command injection payloads into image files.
- OpenStego is an application that offers a free steganography solution. Using OpenStego is pretty straightforward. There are two modes of operation - data hiding and watermarking. In the data hiding mode, you can either hide the data (file) inside an image or extract the data from the image. In the watermark mode, you can watermark files with an invisible signature.
- Pictograph is the best steganography app available for iOS and macOS. Easily send hidden messages to anyone you want. You can even encrypt the messages with a password as well.
- DeEgger Embedder is an extremely lightweight (900 KB) Steganography software to hide messages and documents in videos. The best thing about this freeware is that it has a very simple interface where you can drop your source carrier file and add the secret file that you want to hide. It does not focus on any particular type of carrier file, you can use any type of file as your carrier.
- StegoStick is another powerful video Steganography software to hide messages and documents. It has a very polished user interface. It does what it promises and the best thing about this freeware is that it provides 4 different encryption techniques to embed your secret file in a carrier file. The encryption techniques that it has are DES, Triple DES, RSA, and default.
- OpenPUFF is a free steganography tool for Microsoft Windows that was developed and is still being maintained independently is called OpenPuff Steganography and Watermarking. The application is noteworthy for being the first steganography tool that enables users to conceal data across many carrier files. A carrier chain is created when hidden data are divided among a number of carrier files; it implements three layers of hidden data obfuscation.
